Appalled by words of campaigner
Larry Mazel, Rice Lake

I would not usually be one to write a letter to the editor; however, while at the Haugen Fun Days Parade, I encountered some rather disturbing behavior from a man representing our state Rep. Roger Rivard.
This man was passing out Green Bay Packers/Wisconsin Badger schedules to the crowd at the parade and when he approached me I respectfully declined the offer. He noticed I was wearing a Green Bay Packers, red, white and blue, shirt and he said, "You're a Packers fan aren't you, you're wearing a Packers shirt?" I responded by saying that they were the wrong party for me. Now, you have to realize that there were a number of children sitting on the curb waiting for the candy to be thrown. Among these small children were three African-American children, ages 5-8. The man then said to me, in front of the group of adults I was standing with, "You're not going to vote for that n---er are you?" and then he walked off.
I cannot express to everyone, how appalled I was to hear that come out of someone's mouth, let alone, a subject campaigning for Mr. Roger Rivard. Did this man not notice the mixed company there when he addressed me like this? Could he not notice the small children sitting on the curb?
You know who you are and you know what you said to me. I also know who you are and you cannot deny what was said, I was standing with a group of people who heard also. Shame on you!
I feel what was said to me is wrong, inappropriate and really what is wrong with this country today. Can anyone have his own opinion without someone trying to shove something down their throat? Would he say the same thing about Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, or anyone else with colored skin on our favorite state sports teams? You have certainly picked the wrong individual to say this to, a proud middle- class worker.
Mr. Rivard, do you share that same opinion as your staff that you have beating the streets for you? If so, how can anyone support such bold and irrational thinking! Has nothing changed over the years, do we not respect our fellow man? Do you really call this moving forward? I think not.
What a shame it is to hear these types of racial slurs coming from our local Republican Party and to be said in front of young, impressionable children. Everyone must think long and hard about the things to come for the state of Wisconsin and this November elections. We are not looking for any apology, I think enough has been said from your side.
