Verna Coubal, age 97, of Rice Lake and formerly of New Auburn, died on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home. She was born on November 12, 1916 in Cudahy, WI to Joseph and Agnes (Mlejnek) Snobl.
When Verna was a year old, her family began farming in the Town of Bear Lake, near Haugen. She attended Haugen Elementary School and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1936. As a youngster, Verna was active in Sokol which was a gymnastics organization in Haugen. Sahe spent many summers in Pine City, MN at Sokol Camp where she would teach others the skills of gymnastics. Verna was a life member of ZCBJ-
Western Fraternal Life Association Lodges. She was also the Wisconsin District 4 secretary for 32 years.
She was married at her parents' home in Haugen, WI on May 21, 1949 to Jerry Coubal. They moved and farmed on the Coubal farm near New Auburn where Verna lived until moving to Rice Lake in 2006.
Verna was an active gardener, both flower and vegetable and spent hours every fall canning her bountiful harvest. She was famous for both her banana cream pie and her homemade root beer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, on June 8, 1992; her son, Johnny; her sister, Beatrice "Bea" Yeager; brothers, Joseph "Joey" Snobl, who was killed in WWII, and Jerry Snobl.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Carl) Camen; her niece, Nancy Yeager and a nephew Harvey Yeager, all of Rice Lake; four great-nieces and nephews; nine great-great-nieces and nephews; a great-great-great-niece and nephew; and her sister-in-law, Millie Bialobrzeski of Milwaukee.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 16, 2014 at Skinner Funeral Home in Rice Lake with Robert Heinze and Rev. Wayne Hall officiating. Burial was in Bohemian National Cemetery in Haugen. Pallbearers were Eric Yeager, Mike North, Justin North, William Perry, Joe Perry and Jack Perry.
Skinner Funeral Home of Rice Lake was serving the family.
