Donald B. Johnson, age 98, of Rice Lake, WI, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Woodstone Living in Rice Lake with family at his side. Donald was born on October 31, 1915 in St. Paul, MN to Albert C. and Victoria A. (Topp) Johnson.
Don married Bernice Thompson on August 28, 1941 in Hudson, WI. He and Bernice were living in St. Paul, MN when he was called to duty for the Army Air Corps.
In 1946 Don and a partner, Warren Thomas, founded Thomas and Johnson Scale Service in the St. Paul garage of Don's in-laws. The family moved to Rice Lake in 1947 where Don co-owned and operated the company which became known as Rice Lake Bearing and later Rice Lake Weighing Systems. Don was active with the company until well into his 90s.
The couple raised their four children in Rice Lake and enjoyed spending time together with extended family and friends at "The Farm" on Bear Lake.
Don was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, gardening, harvesting wild rice, sailing, riding motorcycles and working outdoors. Don and Bernice also enjoyed travelling for business events and leisure until her death in 1984.
In 1987 Don married Jean Cameron of Rice Lake. Jean passed away in 2010. He was a member of Rice Lake Elks Club, Ducks Unlimited, American Legion, Moose Lodge and numerous weighing-industry trade organizations.
Donald B. Johnson is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Mary (Lind) Johnson, of Salem, SC, Mark and Barbara (Branham) Johnson, of Rice Lake, WI and Scott and Debi (Horine) Johnson, of West Richland, WA; a daughter, Jane V. Johnson, of North Mankato, MN; a stepson, James Jordan, of Chetek, WI; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Johnson; second wife, Jean Johnson; a stepdaughter, Connie Tooke; parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Roger; and three sisters, Amy, Ruth and Shirley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2014 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rice Lake, WI, Rev. Bob Berg officiating, with interment in Nora Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by Rice Lake Veterans Center Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Lunch will follow the interment at Lehman's Supper Club in Rice Lake.
