Council cools on plans for swim beach facility
The Rice Lake City Council last week accepted a state grant for $152,575 to help fund the construction of a swimming beach and bathhouse at Narrows Park. But some aldermen expressed strong doubts about the project that may keep it from ever being built.
Responding to community pressure to reopen the beach on Lakeshore Drive, which was closed 14 years ago, the city's Community Services Committee last fall backed a plan for new swim facilities at Narrows Park to be built at an estimated cost of $250,000.
The Council later gave the committee the go-ahead to seek a state grant for that project. The grant was awarded in July, and the city had until last Tuesday's Council meeting to accept the grant.
In presenting the issue to the Council, Community Services director Jim Anderson said the estimated cost of the project had increased to $305,000 to take into account engineering fees. But the actual costs wouldn't be known until after bids are received.
