Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Cameron Elementary School are this Thursday, June 19 at 2 p.m.
At its Monday night, June 16 meeting Cameron School Board members approved the general contractor bid by R.J. Jurowski of Whitehall in the amount of $12,752,000.
"This bid is approximately $225,000 under budget," said Joe Leschisin, assistant district supervisor. "Despite the fact that the high school addition bids came in over budget, we are under budget in the other two projects so the overall referendum budget is in very good shape.
"Demolition in the high school started June 9," said Leschisin. "Despite the continued rain, we are still on schedule with the high school addition, track and football fields.
"As such, we are still scheduled to play our first home football game at the new field on Friday, Sept. 12," he said.
Leschisin said he is still working on the Veterans Plaza project, which will be located at the north end of the track and football field at the new facility beside the scoreboard. The project will not only remember past veterans but pay homage to those who have more recently served.
Six flags on 35-foot poles will honor each branch of the military and POW/MIAs. A walkway will surround the area and consist of brick pavers in the shape of a star with an American flag on a 50-foot pole in the center.
"The total cost of the project is approximately $60,000, and we have received about $51,800 to date in donations," he said.
"Next fall we plan to mail out information to allow community members to purchase engraved pavers recognizing a veteran of their choosing," Leschisin said.
The pavers will not only be in the plaza and around the flagpoles but also in the area between the bleachers and the concession stand.

Other business
In personnel items, the resignation of Dan Krug, Middle School custodian, was accepted.
Gina Sookiayak was approved as a first-grade teacher. Also approved was Ashley Johnson as a second-grade teacher.
The board meets again Monday, July 21 at 6 p.m. in the Cameron Middle School library.
