Runners endure morning rain to support cancer research.
Nearly 200 kids and adults walked and ran through Saturday morning's rain in the third annual Forrest Run at UW-Barron County campus in Rice Lake. The 5-kilometer run/walk drew 184 participants, with Keenan Sowa leading competitive runners in 20 minutes and 51 seconds over the cross country course. Chance Miller was second in 21:20, followed by Breg Burznski in 22:02. The female leaders were Brooke Schmidt, fourth overall in 22:41, Lisa Janty in 22:54 and Rachel Johnson in 23:24. A kids' 1-mile run had 14 participants. The event raises money for cancer research, cancer victims and their families, and honors the memory of Forrest Olson, a 1992 Rice Lake High School graduate who died of brain cancer in 2007. This year's Forrest Run will add more than $10,000 to the Forrest Run Fund, said run coordinator Kelly Orr this week.
