Gymnasts set the pace at own invitational

Leading the pack in three of four events, the Rice Lake/Cumberland co-op high school gymnastics team hosted and won a 10-team invitational Saturday.
The RL/C Warriors scored a season-high 138.075 points, finishing ahead of their conference rival River Falls by less than a point. The Wildcats came in at 137.175, with Eau Claire Memorial/North third at 135.75.
RL/C's Alex VanGilder was the all-around champion with a personal high score of 37.3 while winning three events. VanGilder finished more than a point ahead of runner-up Jessee Lerud, a sophomore from Grantsburg/Luck who scored 36.25.
VanGilder, a junior, opened her strong meet by winning on the balance beam with a 9.35. She then posted an 8.925 in floor exercise for 10th place, followed by wins in vaulting at 9.5 and uneven bars with a 9.525.
VanGilder led the Warriors in all events except floor exercise, in which junior Sarah Shervey placed fifth with a 9.1 and senior Haley Strouf tied for seventh at 8.95.
Strouf finished eighth in all-around scores at 34.30, while Shervey was 11th at 33.425.
Also on the floor, senior Hannah Schweitzer had a personal high 8.55 for 17th place.
The Warriors had the high score in three of the four events, falling, literally, only on the beam, their first event of the day. RL/C settled for fourth place on the beam, despite VanGilder's winning performance.
Second on the beam for RL/C was Shervey, tying for eighth place at 8.7.
In vaulting, behind winner VanGilder, the Warriors put four vaulters among the top eight places. Strouf was fourth at 8.8., while seniors Jackie Stensrud and Joy Miller tied for eighth at 8.55.
On the bars, Strouf placed sixth at 8.35 and Stensrud was 10th at 8.05. Senior Hannah Schweitzer was next for RL/C, 19th with a 7.475.
Besides VanGilder's first place, Strouf's eighth place and Shervey's 11th place in all-around, Stensrud was 15th with a 32.15.
The meet's only other event winner besides VanGilder was Eau Claire's Ele Higley, who led the floor exercise with a 9.275.
Trailing VanGilder and Lerud in all-around scores were River Falls senior Karlie Place at 35.85, Eau Claire junior Miranda Severin at 34.775 and River Falls sophomore Brianna Kubic at 34.60.
In team standings, behind RL/C, River Falls and Eau Claire were Stevens Point (134.025, Grantsburg/Luck (124.375, Antigo (124.275, Menomonie (123.725, Superior (107.05), Chippewa Falls (98.05) and Rhinelander (92.675).
