Open Gym sponsored by the Rice Lake Recreation Department begins this Thursday at Tainter Elementary School on the city's southeast side. Open Gym through the fall and winter offers adults and children the opportunity for a variety of recreation activities. "We encourage adaptive recreation and welcome anyone with cognitive or physical disabilities," said recreation coordinator Ellen Daniels. The gym periods are Monday and Thursday nights for adults and high school-age youths, and Saturdays and Sundays for children through Grade 8. On adult nights, three segments are offered. From 7:30 -8:15 p.m. is for walkers, runners and other fitness activities, followed by net play for basketball, volleyball and pickleball from 8:15-8:45 p.m., and wrapping up with court play, including soccer and dodge ball, from 8:45-9:30 p.m. Open Gym on Saturdays and Sundays is from 1:30-4:30 p.m., with three 60-minute segments, starting with free play. From 2:30-3:30 p.m., basketball, volleyball and pickleball are among the activities offered. The final hour is reserved for soccer, floor hockey and dodge ball. Adult supervision is provided by the recreation department. Children 6 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No food or beverages are allowed in the gym.
