The Rice Lake High School tennis team has opened its season with three wins in four nonconference matches. The Warriors won at Superior in the season opener last Thursday, then won two of three matches when they hosted a triangular Monday. Rice Lake defeated Ashland and Unity on Monday but lost to Baldwin-Woodville. All three wins were by 7-0 with sweeps of four singles and three doubles matches. The loss to Baldwin-Woodville was by 6-1, with the doubles team of Bailey Kleven and Jordan Lundberg picking up the lone Warriors win, 6-1, 6-0 over Elizabeth Wahlquist and Clara Thompson. Kleven and Lundberg, both returning seniors for the Warriors, have yet to lose in doubles, though have not played together in every match. Kleven/Lundberg also posted a win in Superior, while Kleven teamed with senior Allison Walsh to win at No. 1 doubles vs. Ashland, and Lundberg was with junior Michaela Scalzo for a No. 2 win against Ashland. Against Unity, Lundberg and sophomore Cecily Lindner posted a No. 1 doubles win, while Kleven/Scalzo won at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles team of senior Grace Schock and sophomore Cheyenne Booth has won three of their four matches. In singles, going 3-1 thus far have been senior Megan Walsh at No. 1, Lindner at No. 2, junior Gloria Brown at No. 3, and junior Lauren Shomion at No. 4. Rice Lake begins Big Rivers Conference play this Thursday, hosting River Falls at 4 p.m. On Friday, the Warriors play in the Eau Claire Regis quadrangular, starting at 10 a.m.
