4/24/2013 4:20:00 PM Orr named scholar/athlete finalist
Rice Lake senior Jenna Orr has been named one of Wisconsin's 32 top scholar athletes from public and nonpublic high schools by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Assn. Sixteen senior girls and 16 senior boys achieved the top combined classroom and sports performances during their 4 years in high school to be selected as finalists for the prestigious 30th annual 2013 WIAA Scholar Athlete Award. Orr has been a three sport athlete and a 4.0 grade point average scholar. She was twice a first team selection on the Big Rivers All-Conference basketball team, and in 2012 was the conference's Player of the Year. The point guard set an all-time school record for scoring with 1,348 points. To determine the top 32 finalists, four boys and four girls are selected from each of four WIAA divisions based on both athletic and academic achievement. Seventeen of this year's finalists have a grade point average of 4.0 to date, while the average GPA is 3.90. The 32 scholar athlete finalists were chosen from among 750 seniors nominated by more than 375 high schools in the state. The finalists, as well as their families and school representatives, will be recognized at an awards ceremony Sunday, May 5 at the Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau. Each finalist will receive a medallion and certificate, and will take with them a special plaque for display in their school's trophy case. Other finalists from the area are Andrea Ostenso of Ladysmith, Tori Winters of Tony and Kyle Larson of Clayton.
