Spring sports begin inside

It may not look a bit like spring on Rice Lake's snow-covered ball fields, running track and golf course, but the spring sports season has begun at Rice Lake High School.
And there's already a track and field meet this week-indoor-for the Warriors when the boys' and girls' teams compete in the Blue Devil Invitational on Friday at UW-Stout Fieldhouse in Menomonie.
Track and field practices began March 4, and the first meet is traditionally viewed as a structured practice for the Warriors, who compete next Tuesday, March 26 in another indoor meet at UW-River Falls.
Brooke Schmidt returns as the girls' track and field coach, while Jared Sasada takes over as the boys' coach for Ted Romportl, who resigned after last season.
Sasada, a math and science instructor in Rice Lake Middle School, coached Middle School track and field last season and was an assistant boys' basketball coach this winter for Rice Lake High School.
Sasada is in his second year in the district. He competed in track and field while attending Carroll University in Waukesha and then coached sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers at Brookfield Central High School before coming to Rice Lake.
After three indoor meets, including at UW-Superior on Thursday, April 4, the Warriors open their outdoor track and field season at home Friday, April 12, with a nine-school invitational.
The April 12 meet is the first of four scheduled home dates. Invitationals are also slated Friday, April 26, and Tuesday, May 7. A Division 1 sectional meet will be hosted by Rice Lake on Thursday, May 23.
Soccer, baseball starting
Spring practices begin Monday for the Rice Lake Warriors in soccer and baseball.
The girls' soccer team, with coach Mike Shomion returning, plays its first game Thursday, March 28, hosting Amery in a 7 p.m. start at Pug Lund Field.
After an away game Monday, April 1 at Hayward, the Warriors open the Big Rivers soccer season Thursday, April 4, hosting Eau Claire North.
The Warriors baseball squad, with Mike Neil returning as head coach, is scheduled for its opener Monday, April 1 against visiting Bloomer. The following day, April 2, the Warriors host Spooner.
The Big Rivers baseball season for Rice Lake opens Friday, April 12, with the Warriors in River Falls.

Softball opener April 2
The Rice Lake Warriors opened softball practices indoors Monday in preparation for their first game Tuesday, April 2, when the Medford Raiders visit Rice Lake.
The Warriors, with Gary Haus returning as head coach, are also home Friday, April 5 for a double-header against Superior.
The Big Rivers softball schedule begins Thursday, April 18 when the Warriors visit River Falls.
The Warriors boys' golf team, under returning coach Tom Germanson, is slated to begin practices, probably indoors, Monday, March 25. The first golf meet is Monday, April 8 at Hudson.
Rice Lake hosts a Big Rivers meet at Turtleback Golf Course on Thursday, April 25.
