Practices are now in full swing for all winter sports at Rice Lake High School. First practices in three sports-girls' basketball, wrestling and boys' swimming-started Monday. The hockey team will see the first game action when the Warriors play at New Richmond on Saturday, Nov. 24. After also playing on the road Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Superior and Thursday, Nov. 29 at River Falls, the first game on home ice is Saturday, Dec. 1, vs. Minocqua Lakeland in a 2 p.m. matinee. Basketball games begin for the Warriors when the girls' team travels to rival Barron on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The first home game for the Rice Lake girls and also the opening game for the boys are both Friday, Nov. 30 in a girls/boys doubleheader against visiting Amery. The girls' game begins at 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys' game at 7:30 p.m. Two of the winter sports teams have new head coaches. Gary Larson, former boys' head coach, takes over as the new girls' head coach. Hans Olson was named in June as new girls' basketball coach to replace Tim Lipke, but Olson left Rice Lake for the Chetek School District before the start of the school year. (In last week's issue, it was incorrectly reported that Hans Olson was still the new coach.) Ryan Parker was named hockey coach in September.Parker was head coach at Altoona the past three seasons. Other Warriors winter sports head coaches remain the same: Kevin Orr for boys' basketball, Ted Sikowski for wrestling, Billy Bandli for boys' swimming, and Judy Hunt for gymnastics.
