The Rice Lake Coliseum skating rink
End of an era for skaters

A four-wheeling era skated to a close Sunday, June 7 when The Coliseum roller rink in Rice Lake, owned by Roy and Shelly Polichnia, offered its last open skating session.

"We're closing because of a downturn in the economy," said Polichnia.

He plans to get back into the workforce and also take some classes. Shelly worked at the roller rink but has another full-time job where she will continue to work.

The Polichnias bought the roller rink in November of 2007 from Don Postle.

"He had it for more than 20 years," said Roy.

Prior to the business being known as Postle's Skate City, it was Moulton's Roller Coliseum, owned by Al Moulton.

The building is now up for sale. A fireworks business is renting it for a month this summer, but Polichnia doesn't know what the future holds.

He said he will really miss the patrons and his employees.

"To get paid to have fun with kids is outstanding," Roy said. "You get to be a kid again."

"And I have an outstanding staff," he said. "All of the kids that came in really brightened my days. And they always had fun."

Wow took someone 2 yrs to drive something in the ground that was around for many yrs, It was the only thing I remember doing on weekends as a kid. Maybe Don or someone can get it back to what it was. It's really a shame to see it fall apart.

The Rink was very special to many. Many of us worked there, played there, grew up there and learned many important lessons about life there. As a community we will feel the impact of the loss for years! Thank you All for some great times!
