Artscape project earns state award
Rice Lake hosted the annual Wisconsin Main Street Awards reception Friday, April 27 where more than 200 people representing 36 communities gathered to share downtown revitalization efforts over the past year.

The Rice Lake Main Street Assn. captured one of the primary awards with its Artscape program, which placed 29 original works of art on banners displayed on light poles in the downtown area.

The project not only won the best downtown beautification award, but also received an honorable mention for the downtown image campaigns for efforts to improve the perceptions of downtown.

The project’s aim was to help beautify the city and encourage residents and visitors to spend time downtown, said Kathy Wellsandt, association manager.

Wellsandt said it was an honor for the city to be chosen to host the gathering, noting that the event is normally held in a more central part of the state. “This is the first time the awards reception has been held this far north in the state.”

Rice Lake Main Street volunteer Bob Moullette was named one of the 2006 Volunteers of the Year, and Bridget Gargulak was chosen as a 2006 honorary board of directors member for their efforts over the past year.

Wellsandt also was recognized for 11 years of service to the Rice Lake program.

The Main Street Program is a comprehensive revitalization effort through the state Department of Commerce that is designed to promote the historic and economic redevelopment of traditional business districts.

Main Street communities inWisconsin are Algoma, Beloit, Chippewa Falls, Columbus, Darlington, De Pere, Eagle River, Fond du Lac, Gillett, Green Bay, Lake Mills, Milwaukee, Marshfield, Mishicot, Monroe, Osceola, Pewaukee, Platteville, Portage, Prairie du Chien, Rhinelander, Richland Center, Ripon, Sharon, Sheboygan Falls, Stevens Point, Sturgeon Bay, Tigerton, Two Rivers, Viroqua, Watertown, Wausau, West Allis, West Bend and Whitewater.-05/02/07
